Money Saving Tips for Winter

During the winter months in Grass Valley, Nevada City, and Auburn areas, energy usage typically  increases as the temperatures drop.  Depending on your rental home’s ability to produce and retain heat, you are either putting your money to good use or watching it fly out the front door with your warm air.  Even simple steps that can be part of your daily routine can help reduce energy usage and provide better energy efficiency.  If you’ve noticed your gas and electric bill have been higher than usual lately, check out the tips below for ways to save money (and energy) during the winter.

No-Cost Tips for Energy Efficiency in Your Grass Valley, Nevada City or Auburn Rental Property

Surprisingly, you can increase savings for no additional cost by following these simple tips.

  • When using your fireplace, close the damper to block cold air from coming in.  Be sure to turn down your heater while the fire is burning to conserve energy.
  • Close all window coverings at night and when leaving the house to prevent warm air from escaping through the windows.
  • When at home, set your thermostat to 68°F (or lower, if tolerable).  For each degree the temperature is increased, you use 3-5% more energy.
  • When leaving the house, set your thermostat to 56°F as this will allow you to save 5-15% per year on your heating bill when the temperature is lowered for at least 8 hours.

Low-Cost Tips for Energy Efficiency in Your Grass Valley, Nevada City or Auburn Rental Property

Even small investments such as these can drastically improve your home’s heat retention.

  • Caulk gaps and cracks around door frames and windows to prevent cold air from sneaking in.
  • Install weatherstripping in drafty gaps created by uneven doors.
  • Older water heaters can be wrapped in an insulation blanket to minimize heat loss. Remember to leave the air intake vent uncovered.
  • Properly seal attics, walls and floors to help with heat retention.

Following these steps will not only increase your energy efficiency, but will also help to lower your gas and electric bills.  Spending just a little bit of time can end up helping you save a lot! We experience all four seasons in Norther California. Applying these tips will help you greatly in your Grass Valley, Nevada City, or Auburn rental property!
